Still Learning
I came across an interview with two legends from the music world, Rick Beato and Ted Gioia.
They spoke about a theory in psychology called Fluid Intelligence vs Crystalised Intelligence.
Fluid intelligence is all about being adaptable, improvising and being in the moment. Crystalised Intelligence is all about calling upon a lifetimes worth of experience, knowledge and facts.
It did make me ask myself the question: Am I Fluid or Crystalised?
I was teaching tabla to a young student who hasn't been learning for long. During our session, I saw the difference between us. I have more experience in the bank to tap into from technique, composition, rhythm, feel and so on.
At the end of the session, I asked the student to recap their understanding of the session, and they gave me an analogy that was so brilliant that it reversed our roles. I became the student! It goes without saying, I banked that analogy because it was that good!
