Can't Quite Put My Finger on It

Kiyomizu-dera (Kiyomizu - temple) in Osaka, Japan. (2008)

I often wonder what makes a place sacred.

Does it have to be thousands of years old?

Steeped in history?

Is it the architecture?

The spiritual energy?

The aura?

The scent?

The hymns?

The prayers?

Did a miracle happen there?

Or is it the people?

I find myself asking these questions every time I step into a holy city or place of worship, wherever I am in the world.

Each one seems to carry its own unique energy.

I've realised I don't need to understand it.

Feeling it is enough.
